If anyone has any idea what this song may mean, on any level, I'd like to hear it. Obviously, the verses have a lot to do with despair, and are perhaps simply showing the state of a dejected individual, but the chorus completely throws me. I would love to know what the Binary Star represents, and why that thing or person is like a binary star. Also, spiritual implications would be interesting to know. Thoughts, anyone?
ps-If you like these sorts of lyrics with deep implications and thought provoking metaphors/paradoxes, you should check out Steve Taylor. I just found him, and he's really old, but apparently he wrote a TON of the Newsboys earlier stuff. _________________ And though the last lights off the black West went

I'm thinking this song is about a break up, or at least some sort of relational hurt. A binary star is actually two stars in orbit around one another. In a binary system each star has a companion star.
Steve Taylor is great. Another "really old" guy you might want to check out would be Larry Norman. |

hmmm... I don't know if I can even begin to attempt to accurately interpret the meaning. But as I listen to it, the words that stand out the most to me are "...and up against the starry sea, I thought that you were meant for me."
Taking a closer look a the lyrics, it sounds like a love that didn't work out as hoped. The binary star metaphor being the companionship that was hoped for. |

OK, relationship severance makes since. I definitely think that the "I thought that you were meant for me" line is emphasized, and for a reason. To say that the "binary star" would have been a hoped for inseperable companion seems to be the logical next step from this. Good thinking. This also makes good since in that Reese Roper has had several engagements. _________________ And though the last lights off the black West went

| I always thought that "Binary Star" was a metaphor for blue eyes... And having recurring lyrics about blue eyes in Reese's songs it seemed to work... |

I haven't really looked over the lyrics lately, but I've always gotten the impression also that binary, being 1s or 0s, on or off, was sort of the way a breakup can feel. one day you're on, and the next it's just off, ended. Never a fun feeling.
But knowing Reese, and knowing BS2, the whole science behind binary stars is a much better explanation. |
